DURHAM, NC (August 28, 2023) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04), member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released the following statement on the campus shooting that occurred at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this afternoon.

“I am absolutely devastated by the news of another school shooting, this time right here in our community on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus. My heart and deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and the entire UNC community. No student, faculty member, or parent should ever have to experience the terrifying tragedy that UNC faced today.

“I am immensely grateful for the swift response from UNC police, local and state law enforcement officers, and first responders, who are actively working to keep our students and community safe. As we wait for more information regarding the events of this afternoon, it is clear that lawmakers must take concrete action against the horrific acts of gun violence that plagues cities and towns across the nation. We must urgently pass lifesaving commonsense gun reform legislation to protect our communities and prevent future tragedies.”
