Applications for the 2025 Summer Internship program in Washington, DC and Durham, NC will be accepted from March 10 - March 31.
Are you interested in community development, public service, and congressional affairs? If so, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee is seeking applications for internship positions in her Washington, DC and Durham, NC offices for Summer 2025! The internship is in-person and paid.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a student at a community college or university. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are eligible to apply.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Each internship lasts 12 weeks.
- Part-time Interns: Must commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Shifts will be no shorter than 3.5 hours.
- Full-time Interns: Must commit to 35 - 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
WASHINGTON, DC OFFICE DUTIES:
- Answering phone calls, managing email inquiries, filing documents, data entry.
- Assisting staff with legislative projects and other tasks as assigned, attending legislative briefings and hearings, sorting constituent correspondence.
- Compiling daily press clips for the Congresswoman.
- Leading tours of the Capitol for constituents.
DURHAM DISTRICT OFFICE DUTIES:
- Answering phone calls, managing email inquiries, filing documents, data entry.
- Assisting constituents with issues related to government service, casework management, and follow-up communication.
- Attending community events, helping organize outreach initiatives, and building relationships with local stakeholders.
- Gathering information on local policies, legislative proposals, and community concerns.
- Drafting letters, emails, and other correspondence to constituents on behalf of the office.
- Contributing to special projects, including event planning.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of issues and events in the district in which the Congresswoman is involved.
- Professional telephone etiquette.
- Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a pleasant and professional manner.
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
- Thoroughness and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement.
- Knowledge of office computer applications and proficiency in word processing.
