Ranking Member Foushee and Chairman Haridopolos Introduce Resolution Designating May 20 as National Women in Aerospace Day

WASHINGTON, DC (December 10, 2025) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) and Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) introduced a bipartisan resolution designating May 20 as National Women in Aerospace Day to emphasize the importance of American women in aviation, human spaceflight, and other related aerospace fields. Congresswoman Foushee and Congressman Haridopolos serve as the Ranking Member and Chairman, respectively, of the House Science, Space, and Technology’s Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics.

“Women have long expanded the frontiers of aerospace, helping lead our nation with exemplary strength and dedication,” said Congresswoman Valerie Foushee. “May 20 marks the anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s solo transatlantic, becoming the first woman to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. As the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics and a Member of the Aviation Subcommittee, I’m proud to join Chairman Haridopolos in leading this resolution recognizing National Women in Aerospace Day, and I’m committed to working with my colleagues to continue uplifting the tremendous contributions that women have made throughout our nation’s history––in the sky, the sciences, and beyond.”

“In aerospace, every breakthrough comes from discipline, hard work, and a willingness to reach beyond the horizon. The women we’re recognizing in this resolution embody that spirit. Their integrity, excellence, and drive have shaped real progress on Florida’s Space Coast, and they continue to inspire all of us who care about America’s future in space,” said Congressman Mike Haridopolos.

“I am grateful that Rep Foushee is putting forth a resolution for a National Women In Aerospace Day. Despite being “hidden,” we have always been involved in making significant contributions to the field. This resolution will increase awareness of our contributions and help inspire the next generation of women pilots, astronauts and academics. Thank you Rep. Foushee for such an honor!” said Dr. Jeanette Epps, an aerospace engineer and retired NASA astronaut.

“As someone who has spent her career in aerospace and benefited from the example of women who opened doors before me, this resolution means a great deal. Women have always been essential to the progress of space, even when their contributions were overlooked. Honoring that legacy is important, and so is investing in the women and girls who are coming next. I am proud to support the message this resolution sends and grateful for the continued recognition of the women who keep pushing our country forward in aerospace,” said Tahara Dawkins, Executive Committee Member, Patti Grace Smith Fellowship.

The resolution recognizes trailblazing women including Harriet Quimby, Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart, Jacqueline Cochran, Pearl I. Young, Jerrie Cobb, Katherine Johnson, Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, Eleanor Williams, Emily Howell Warner, Dr. Sally Ride, Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, Dr. Mae Jemison, Dr. Ellen Ochoa, Patrice Clarke-Washington, Colonel Eileen Collins, Dr. Christine Darden, Dr. Jeanette Epps, Dr. Jessica U. Meir, Christina Koch and the extensive achievements of women who have expanded the frontiers of aerospace.
