WASHINGTON, DC (October 25, 2023) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04), issued the following statement after MAGA extremist Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-04) was elected to be the 56th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“For over three weeks, House Republican infighting and dysfunction interrupted the House of Representative’s ability to function and govern responsibly,” said Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04). “Instead of focusing on finding a bipartisan path forward, House Republicans doubled down on their partisanship and elected a Speaker of the House who helped lead the charge to overturn the 2020 election results, and is supportive of criminalizing abortion nationwide, stripping rights from the LGBTQ+ community, and has worked to slash Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

“Our nation and the American people deserve better. House Democrats are united now more than ever and stand ready to deliver for the American people by pushing back against extremist leadership and harmful policies that aim to cut critical federal programs, limit diversity and inclusion, and undermine our democracy.”
