WASHINGTON, DC (May 22, 2025) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) released the following statement after voting against the House Republicans’ extreme reconciliation bill, the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, which will make radical cuts to social services across the country while adding trillions to the national debt.
“Since my first day in Congress, I have been clear that I will never negotiate on any cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, food assistance programs, and other efforts that help those in need across our communities, and today, I proudly stood by this commitment by voting against this extreme Republican tax scam.
“With this harmful piece of legislation, Trump and Republicans have made their priorities clear. Despite repeated promises to not touch Medicaid, they brought a bill to the floor that would trigger more than $500 billion in Medicare cuts, while also slashing vital food assistance programs like SNAP, free school meal programs like the Community Eligibility Provision, and more.
“For a party that claims to focus on ‘fiscal responsibility’, destroying vital services that countless Americans rely on to carve out tax breaks for billionaires reveals exactly who the Republicans are truly looking out for. They care about the ultra-wealthy—not the hospitals that will close, not the kids who will have to wonder where their next meal will come from, not the seniors who depend on Medicaid, and not the lives that will be lost.
“This extreme bill will directly impact and harm millions of children and working families across North Carolina, and is a profound betrayal to the American people as a whole. Alongside my House Democrat colleagues, I will continue to fight the senseless cuts to our vital federal agencies and programs that we have seen throughout this Congress and will work to deliver the assistance and benefits that hard-working Americans need and deserve.”
Specifically, the Republican Tax Scam will:
- Add $3.7 trillion to the national deficit in the next decade alone.
- Instantly trigger over $500 billion in Medicare cuts through Statutory PAYGO, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
- Cause 30,147 people in North Carolina’s Fourth District to lose ACA or Medicaid insurance coverage, according to the Congressional Budget Office and Joint Economic Committee.
- Block states from collecting any new or increased provider taxes, instantly cutting over $100 billion to Medicaid nationwide and inhibiting states from collecting future taxes to support hospitals, disease outbreaks and community-based services for people with disabilities.
- Cut retroactive coverage that protects Americans from thousands of dollars of medical debt in unforeseen emergencies or when they unexpectedly need nursing home care.
- Slash at least $230 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Require the state of North Carolina to pay an unprecedented $700 million, equivalent to the state’s entire Department of Public Safety budget, to continue current SNAP benefits.
- Eliminate an estimated $30 billion in total revenue from farmers and ranchers.
- Boost the incomes of the richest 10% of Americans while lowering the incomes of the lowest 10%, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
- Phase out tax credits included in the Inflation Reduction Act for clean-energy investment and production tax credits.
