WASHINGTON, DC (July 3, 2025) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) released the following statement after voting against the extreme Republican reconciliation bill, the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, which makes cuts to health care, guts nutritional assistance programs, strips environmental protections, adds trillions to the national debt, and prioritizes tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy over the needs of working families.
“Today, I proudly voted against this unconscionable and immoral bill that sacrifices health care, food security, and environmental protections for millions of Americans and abandons hardworking families to deliver tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. The facts of this bill are undeniable: it imposes record cuts to Medicaid, putting hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers at risk. It defunds vital food assistance programs that keep children, families, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities fed. It even raises taxes on the lowest-income Americans throughout the country—all while adding trillions to the national debt.
“At a time when everyday costs are on the rise, Republicans have made a cruel and calculated choice to turn their backs on the needs of the communities they serve in favor of billionaire tax breaks and their own political agendas. My colleagues across the aisle need to take a long look in the mirror. The American people do not deserve this outright betrayal—they deserve leaders who will put their needs first and work for them, fight for them, and protect them at every step.”
The GOP Reconciliation Package originally passed the U.S. House on May 22, 2025, by a vote of 215-214. An amended version of the bill passed the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, by a vote of 51-50.Today, the U.S. House voted to pass these changes by a vote of 218-214.
